Most Gambian hotels are geared primarily to package tours. Accommodation is often booked up in the tourist season (November to May), and confirmation of advance booking should be sought. Most of the hotels are self-contained complexes set in spacious gardens and will generally cater for most tourist needs. Bedrooms will not always be air-conditioned. The number of hotels has increased greatly in recent years and is expected to continue; in 1967 there were only two hotels with a total of 52 beds, whereas now there are over 24 with 6000 beds, both in Banjul and along the coast.
