At first, people only used cord telephones. In many parts of the country, they could not communiate with their business, family and friends in the Capital City, other regions, and even more, other countries. This was making their working and personal relationships more difficult.
This situation started to change in 1989, when 4 investors of Millicom International Cellular (MIC), arrived in Guatemala. Their objective was to found Comunicaciones Celulares, S. A. -Comcel- an enterprise that would offer Guatemalan people solutions and possibilities of communication.
In November of the same year, Comcel started to operate in the country. Later on the guatemalan goverment authorized the operation of the "B" cellular band.
In September, 1990, were accomplished the first test signals, after finishing implementation of the cells in the Cerro Alux, Las Lomas and Guarda Viejo In October Comcel was born.
The central system at that time had capacity for720 portsand 10,800 intent calls during the heaviest traffic hours. The three cells (with 10,000 meters between each of them) connected 69 voice channels, the equivalent of 2,000 clients. The system covered 86% of the Capital City.
As time passed Comcel grew in technology and services. Its objetive of communicating all of Guatemala began to come true in 1993 with the installment of the first cell in Escuintla. This improved the service in that department, nearby cities and a great part of port of San José.
The story that started as a dream to offer solutions in cordless telephonic communications, today covers more than 36,000 km2 around the country, with a huge network of cells and central telephones located in strategic places that allowed comunication in more than 160 towns throughout the country.

Comcel invests to improve its service with digital technology.
In order to continue offering the best mobile service telephone, Comcel signed a contract for US$40 million with the Ericsson Company, for the installment of a network of digital technology "TDMA " in Guatemala City. This allowed to increase the capacity of the digital services that were offered until then. The installation of the network was motivated also by the world standard of the Millicom International Cellular operations, as well as a desire to provide the best service to Comcel clients.
Comcel has been distinguished by giving to its clients the best service in mobile telephony. That is why it signed up an agreement with Ericsson to get a new digital platform TDMA. The selection of this platform responded to the efficient experience that was demostrated in other markets like Europe, Asia, United States, Canada and Mexico. The new platform allowed for a variety of services, better signal reception and selection of apparatus. With this, Comcel strenghten his compromise of a Total Guarantee with Guatemala: offering the best price, service through many communication solutions.
Millicom International Cellular increases its participation in Comcel.
The world operator in telecommunications, Millicom International Cellular (MIC) increased its stock participation in Comcel form a 47% to 55%. The increase of MIC stocks in Comcel, shows the trust in our country´s development. It also strengthened the compromise of the company to provide better comunication services with international quality standards.
