GUATEMALA MERGES WITH GLOBALISATION

Guatemala has a total population of more than 11 million people of which 50% are under the age of 30. It is one of the youngest and most populated Countries in Central America. Guatemala City, the capital has approximately 2 million inhabitants and is the fast paced, cosmopolitan urban centre. Founded in 1776, the Capital City is served by the Aurora International Airport, located in the suburbs of the city, close to the financial centres. Surrounded by Volcanoes and mountains the city lies at 5,000 feet above sea level. Guatemala's strategic geographic location is the port of entry to the Central American region, with the largest economy and is the best situated for the production and export of all kinds of goods to the international markets. "Investment is still flowing and we are still taking advantage of this proximity with the US and Mexico, making it easy to export goods to these countries and to Europe. We have a huge variety in terms of fruits and vegetables, making our exports in this sector good",explained the Guatemalan Ambassador to the European Union, Mr Edmond Mulet Lesieur.



Guatemala is undergoing structural adjustments that are further enhancing its appeal as both a competitive commercial business partner as well as an investment destination in which multinational corporations are increasingly focusing. The administration of President Alfonso Portillo

(2000-2004) - the fifth successive constitutionally elected Government from a different political party since 1985- is undertaking changes to broaden the already liberal economy in which the private sector plays a paramount role. The Government is striving to improve internal security, enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Government, and to upgrade the infrastructure of the country
