MISSION
STATEMENT |
Air Pacific is Fiji's international airline providing
air transport and communication services to Fiji.
Our mission is to be an outstanding airline by
providing a safe, high quality service to our
customers, to prosper as a business and to provide
a reasonable return to our shareholders.
HISTORY
|
Air Pacific began with a dream of the famous
Australian aviator, Harold Gatty, who started
the airline on September 1, 1951 and commenced
service as Fiji Airways on domestic routes in
Fiji with an eight Dragon Rapide.
The airline was purchased by Qantas in March
1958. In 1960 BOAC (now British Airways) and TEAL
(now Air New Zealand) became equal third shareholders.
The next year, the first international service
to Tonga was started.
In 1965 the Fiji Government took up a quarter
equal shareholding. The airline changed its name
to Air Pacific in 1971 to reflect its growing
involvement in the region and the next year entered
the jet age with delivery of its first BAC 1-11.
In May 1974 the Fiji Government became the major
shareholder and in 1978, the famous rainbow colours
were introduced onto the aircraft. The route network
was progressively enlarged to include New Zealand,
Australia and the USA.
In 1985 the Qantas / Air Pacific Support Agreement
came into effect and Qantas increased their shareholding.
In 1985 the first B/$/ was delivered. Services
to Japan commenced in 1988. The fleet was converted
to an all Boeing jet fleet in 1992. Qantas increased
its shareholding to 46% in 1998.
Air Pacific continued to expand the route network
and in 1998/9 introduced three New Generation
B737-800/700 aircraft. Throughout their fifty
one years, we have had an outstanding safety record.
CAPITAL
INVESTMENT AND EXPENDITURE |
Air Pacific needs a great deal of capital to
continue to grow. To prove that capital, it retains
an amount from profit each year to be used to
finance the future needs of the airline. Without
these earnings, debt would be greater and borrowing
difficult. Air Pacific funds its own growth and
investment.
The largest discretionary share is used to sell
tourism to Fiji, both by direct promotion and
in sales support in the country's main source
markets. Manpower, airport and engineering and
maintenance are significant areas of expenditure,
which provide a direct benefit to Fiji.

TOURISM
AND AIR PACIFIC |
TURNOVER BY SECTOR 2000
Tourism is the largest industry in Fiji employing
over 40,000 people throughout the islands. Foe
every job directly created in the tourism sector
it is estimated that four other people have employment
in support to the industry. Air Pacific, as the
largest carrier of tourists to Fiji, plays a critical
role in the development of the industry. Air Pacific
is a major source of Foreign Exchange for Fiji.
VISITOR ARRIVALS INTO FIJI
Whilst Air Pacific faces significant competition
from other Airlines based in the Pacific Rim,
it still carries more visitors and tourists than
any other airline. With the strong focus on Fiji
as a destination, Air Pacific helps build tourism
numbers from all source markets. Amongst the airlines
serving the South Pacific, only Air Pacific is
totally devoted to and focused on building tourism
in Fiji.
ANUAL SPEND PROMOTING FIJI
Air Pacific is the largest investor in the promotion
of Fiji in ll the major source markets. Indeed
Air pacific spends around ten times more than
the Fiji Visitors Bureau when discounting and
wholesaler support is also taken into account.
Sales and marketing are the single largest component
of our international expenditure. But if Fiji
tourism is to continue to grow it is important
that Air Pacific promotes the country.
FREE AND DISCOUNTED TRAVEL
Air Pacific contributes thousands of dollars each
year in free and discounted air travel for different
activities. This allows people and goods to travel,
expanding Fiji's knowledge base and technology.
The company also provides significant social support
for medical and welfare related travel.
The major proportion of free and discounted travel
is for tourism promotion missions and inbound
tourism, educational tours which help to promote
Fiji's tourism and areas of social importance
for Fiji, plus builds export markets for Fiji's
products.
YEAR 2002

|
SALES & MARKETING
With the company still feeling the residual effects
of May 200, the biggest challenge Air Pacific
faced in the sales and marketing arena was to
develop campaigns in key source markets to bring
people back to Fiji.
The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre
in New York on September 11th, immediately threw
international travel into turmoil and brought
the tourism industry worldwide to its knees.
This resulted in the resurrection of the Tourism
Action Group for a short period to assess the
impact of this event and develop appropriate promotional
strategies. Whilst Fiji and Air Pacific were not
immune to the effects of this tragedy, it would
eventually provide an unexpected windfall for
Fiji as a destination later in the year as Northern
Hemisphere travellers opted for the perceived
safety of the South Pacific Vacations.
AMADEUS
As a result of Qantas and British Airways moving
to the 'AMADEUS' Reservations System, a decision
was taken to also adopt the same system from November
2002. This latest technology reservations system
has features and benefits, which will help streamline
operations and dovetail into Air Pacific's overall
commitment to increasing its capabilities and
resources.
