Made in Ghana
Ghana's Free Zones policy is the mainspring driving the government's medium-term goals under the Vision
2020 project. Established in 1995, the Ghana Free Zones Board serves as a "one-stop approval service" to investors wishing to establish a free zone project.
The Free Zones policy aims at promoting the processing and manufacturing of goods, as well as the development of commercial and service activities at seaports and airports. Private sector driven, the free zones will produce 'Made in Ghana' goods primarily for export, with only about 30 % of their output permitted to reach the local market. Attractive incentives are available to investors interested in operating in the free zone enclaves. One of three current factory zones in operation is the American Pioneer Food Cannery Company (Heinz group), a tuna processing firm.

This demonstrates the government's commitment to a market driven economy, and has attracted U.S. government support. USAID has implemented its biggest Trade and Investment Program (TIP) in sub-Saharan Africa, which has been instrumental in helping Ghana move to open markets.
Trade and Industry Minister, Dr. J. Abu believes that U.S. corporations, with their government's official support, should feel encouraged to follow other American firms who have entered the Ghanaian economy. These include Kaiser Aluminum Company, Mobil Ghana Ltd., Heinz and Pfizer International. |
