SPORT FISHING

Trolling the waters for big water fish is the adventure of a lifetime. The lines are cast and the waiting begins.but if talk around the docks is correct.you won't wait for long. And luckily for them, billfish rank high above trout for bragging rights.

Guatemala is considered to be one of the best places in the world for bill fishing. Local fishing operators are in big demand by an international crowd that plans their outings months in advance. Anglers can troll for black marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, dorado, yellow-fin tuna and albacore tuna.

The Guatemalan Pacific Coast has become a number one spot in recent years, especially out of Puerto Quetzal and Iztapa. Boats are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, excellent tackle and well-trained personnel who can coach you on anything from stance to reeling techniques. Anglers who bring their own equipment begin trolling right away and are in for an outstanding experience. Local fishing operators offer custom packages specifically tailored to the visiting group.

Daily expeditions run out of both Puerto Quetzal and Iztapa. There are one day tours as well as multi-day excursions that will have you battling the denizens of the deep as often as you can handle. Strict catch-and-release laws protect these majestic creatures so be aware when planning your fishing excursion. Most outfits take care of any paperwork and license fees, but be sure to ensure that it is all up-to-date before you hit the water.
The waters off Guatemala's lengthy Pacific coast are renowned for their action-packed fishing. According to local fishing guides, many boats out in deep waters have made record numbers of catches in one day. They say twenty sailfish strikes in a day on one boat are not uncommon. If that's the kind of action you're looking for then you've come to the right place.

Trying to reel in a yellow fin tuna requires serious strength and stamina. They are known for their strength and speed. So if you're not feeling up to par, the plentiful populations of dorado and mahi mahi (dolphinfish) will give even the greenest angler an opportunity to get in on the action.

Saltwater fishing isn't for everyone though. Those interested in the calm water of a river or lake aren't left behind. The Río Dulce area boasts a fantastic population of tarpon. Anyone who has managed to hook a tarpon knows that these tremendous fish can be quite a challenge. The prime months for tarpon are from March through June. Visitors to the country during these months will enjoy sun-filled days just before the rainy season.

As with any outdoor sport, be aware of the tropical sun and its powerful rays. Take the time to be well prepared and assure yourself of a lengthy vacation free of painful sunburn. Pack the essentials - a lightweight, cotton, long-sleeved shirt, a hat, sunglasses for the glare and, of course, sunblock.

Prepare yourself for the adventure of a lifetime on Guatemala's Pacific waters. The blue ocean, cloud-free sky and healthy billfish population are the prime ingredients for an unforgettable vacation. And remember that billfish rank higher than trout for an extraordinary fish story!
