Population



The population of Mauritius as at December 1997 was estimated at 1.2 million. It forms aunique mosaic of different races, cultures and religions since Mauritians are descendants of immigrants from the Indian sub-continent, Africa, Europe and China. The cultural diversity and harmony of the island makes Mauritius a unique place in the world. Most Mauritians are bilingual, being equally fluent in French and English. English is the official language, but French and Creole are widely spoken while a number of oriental languages such as Hindi and Mandarin also forms part of the linguistic blend.

Mauritius enjoys a literacy rate of over ninety percent.   Education at the secondary and tertiary levels is free and the Government, conscious of the fact that the country’s most valuable resource is its people, is constantly striving to improve the educational system. Considerable effort is also being deployed into industrial and vocational training.The labour force in 1997 was estimated to be over 505,500 with a major proportion being absorbed by the manufacturing sector. The University of Mauritius ensures a regular flow of graduates in a wide range of disciplines apt to cater for the demand of the labour market. The large pool of well educated young people, versatile and easily trainable, is a valuable asset for the country to meet the challenges of an ever increasing competitive working environment.
