LOS CABOS HAS EVOLVED INTO MEXICO'S LEADING UPSCALE TOURIST DESTINATION
Los Cabos is one of Mexico's fastest growing resorts that has evolved into Mexico's leading upscale tourist destination. Hollywood first discovered it in the post-World War II years when stars went down for the sportfishing and to relax in privacy. It was not until the 1980s that tourism emerged as more hotels and infrastructure began to be built and Los Cabos molded an image as a singular upscale Mexican destination. Growth then soared in the 1990s, bringing increasingly higher quality hotels, facilities and services. In summer 1997, with the opening of Las Ventanas al Paraiso, Los Cabos got its first five-star, world-class resort property. That Los Cabos has been discovered is no surprise. There is so much here, in a pristine desert and marine environment of startling natural beauty. There's world-class sportfishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, yachting, sea kayaking, surfing and windsurfing. The golfer has five spectacular courses to choose from including the 18-hole Robert Trent Jones II Cabo Real course that wraps around Las Ventanas al Paraiso. Excursions into the unspoiled desert landscape and whale watching are among the other activities enjoyed in the warm sun that shines year-round. Visitors experience the natural charm and quaintness of Old Mexico in the town of San Jose del Cabo, where there are excellent restaurants as well as many shops with silver jewelry, hand-painted vases and other artisanry. On the other end of the cape is fun city, Cabo San Lucas, teeming with restaurants, cafes on the sand, curio shops, boutiques and nightclubs and bars with dancing and music into the wee hours.
Lay of the Land :
Located at the southern tip of Mexico's 1,000-mile-long Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos combines a starkly beautiful desert landscape with one of the richest marine environments encompassing both the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez (the Gulf of California, which is an arm of the Pacific extending north to within 75 miles of the U.S. border). The Sea of Cortez is an underwater wonderland, teeming with extraordinarily abundant and diverse sea life. The desert is a mosaic of color and texture with forests of saguaro cactus and indigenous plants such as the boogum and elephant trees that exist only here, sand dunes of Saharan proportions, and stunning rock formations. The dramatic rock outcropping at the tip of the cape known as "El Arco" (The Arch) has become the immediately recognizable symbol of Los Cabos.
The Tourist Corridor :
Los Cabos -- "The Capes" -- is the general name given to the area but it refers more specifically to the "tourist corridor." The tourist corridor is a 20-mile-long strip of white-sand beaches, hotels and resorts between the two towns at opposite ends of the Baja Peninsula=s tip, San Jose del Cabo on the eastern end and Cabo San Lucas on the western.
Weather :
The warm, arid climate of the Baja Peninsula, where average annual rainfall is only about 10 inches, results in beautiful sunshine 350 days a year in Los Cabos.
Snorkeling & Scuba Diving :
The Sea of Cortez is a colorful underwater world of beauty and wonder with living coral reefs, sand falls, ocean canyons, old shipwrecks to explore -- and everything from tropical and schooling fish to hammerhead sharks, moray eels and turtles.
Sportfishing :
Los Cabos is one of the world's great sportfishing destinations. The varieties of fish, in an area so compact and accessible, is unequaled anywhere else. It is particularly famous for its concentration of swordfish, sailfish and marlin C and, in fact, is known as "The Marlin Capital of the World." In addition to big trophy fish, you can catch everything from Dorado (mahi mahi) and tuna to roosterfish, halibut, wahoo and corvina.
Sailing & Sea Kayaking :
Los Cabos is a recreational sailor's dream with endless undeveloped coastline, small islands and open waters to explore. It is also a world-class sea kayaking destination with coves, inlets, water caves and beaches that are only accessible by kayak. Los Cabos is an excellent place to learn sea kayaking skills, as well, since the seas are generally calm.
Windsurfing & Surfing :
Los Cabos is a windsurfer's paradise with good wind action, particularly from November through March. And surfing is excellent on the Pacific without the crowds -- and fighting for waves -- typical of the surfing spots in northern Baja close to the California border.
Golf :
Los Cabos has evolved into one of Mexico's leading golf destinations. The destination now boasts five spectacular 18-hole championship courses, with more coming. They have been designed by some of the biggest names in golf course design: Palmilla, Cabo del Sol and El Dorado were designed by Jack Nicklaus, Cabo San Lucas Country Club by Roy and Pete Dye; and Cabo Real by Robert Trent Jones II.
Local Towns & Villages :
Several towns and villages, easily reached on day trips, offer history, shopping and more. Todos Santos, originally a Jesuit mission and plantation, today is known for its fishing industry, fruit orchards and handmade crafts; it's a beautiful 50-mile drive up the Pacific coast from Cabo San Lucas through a tropical desert landscape with a backdrop of jagged mountains. Miraflores, about 25 miles from San Jose del Cabo, is a 200-year-old village known for leather products and hot springs. Santiago, about 35 miles from San Jose del Cabo, is another quaint Baja village with the area's only zoo. About 124 miles north of San Jose is the main town and capital of Southern Baja, La Paz; originally a pirates haven, Italian missionaries built a church here more than 500 years ago and today it offers history, shopping, restaurants and more.
Shopping :
A colorful and diverse selection of handmade artisanry is sold in the shops including silver jewelry, hand-painted vases, wrought-iron candle holders, ceramic figures and masks, flowing Mexican dresses, and carved wood objects.
Nightlife :
Los Cabos is alive with food, music and dancing. Cabo San Lucas at night has been called Cabo San "Loco" with its many happening bars, clubs, discos and live music. San Jose del Cabo is known for its fine restaurants and nightclubs with live dance bands and other entertainment.
LAS VENTANAS AL PARAISO: OPENING THE "WINDOWS TO PARADISE"
Las Ventanas al Paraiso was not just built, it was created...to evoke emotion, to stimulate and satisfy the senses. It rose from a well-thought-out concept: incorporate and enhance the stunning natural environment, be unique to the upscale yet relaxed destination of Los Cabos, encompass every pleasure, service, comfort and stimuli -- to open up "windows to paradise" for each and every guest.
The spectacular views from every suite and from virtually anywhere on the property, the emphasis on the natural element of water, unsurpassed quality symbolized by extensive hand craftsmanship, a relaxed idyllic ambiance and every world-class service and amenity coupled with the ultimate in personal attention -- these are the essential currents that flow through Las Ventanas al Paraiso.
The Las Ventanas al Paraiso experience begins the moment you arrive at the resort. As you enter, the "windows to paradise" immediately open up before you: a panorama of a flower-filled oasis, in sand and earth colors, right through the hotel to the azure sea, white sand and verdant green of the 15th hole of the Robert Trent Jones II golf course.
Instead of a check-in desk and computer, you are personally received, served your favorite beverage or cocktail, and personally shown to your suite. On the short walk to your suite, deep-blue waters flow before your eyes -- with the meandering waterways that begin in the open lobby area and spill through a series of ponds and a serpentine network of swimming pools, their infinity-edge designs creating images of an endless horizon.
Passing through an exquisite, hand-carved cedar door, you step into not just a suite but a spacious and sensual living space, and the largest standard guest rooms in Mexico. From virtually anywhere in your suite, visions open up of the ocean, the coastline and/or the golf course. The decor is all beautifully handcrafted, with raised bed platforms with oversized throw pillows, floors of stone and inlaid-pebble work, and unique windows that appear to be mother-of-pearl yet are opaque and transparent at the same time. A spacious dressing area with a basin leads into a large bathroom with separate toilet and shower rooms and a second basin with long, narrow windows on either side creating the ultimate illumination for the closest shaves and perfect make-up application.
The interior and exterior of every suite flow together, separated only by glass doors that completely open up the room to a private terrace. And on your terrace, which has latilla shading for filtered sunlight, are a combination splash-pool and jacuzzi, a luxurious sitting area for relaxing or dining around a hand-tiled table, and lush plants. All suites have a wood-burning, terracotta fireplace and a telescope. In addition, upstairs suites have a private rooftop patio where you can sunbathe, take in expansive panoramas, savor romantic meals, or enjoy the perfect nights gazing at the infinite stars.
Each day at Las Ventanas is filled with a choice of pleasures. At the world-class Spa & Fitness Facility, with separate facilities for men and women, indulge yourself with beauty treatments, massages, steam baths and saunas or do your favorite exercise routines. Play the challenging and exciting 18-hole course, designed by Robert Trent Jones II, that twists and climbs up the hilly desert landscape studded with saguaro and flowering acacia. Lounge around under umbrellas on the expansive waterfront patios, sipping drinks, listening to music on CD players with headsets provided by the staff and enjoying refreshing spritzes. Swim the maze of pools, stopping at the swim-up bar, sitting on an in-water stool. Charter a sporting yacht for excursions to local islands and up the Sea of Cortez. And of course, the concierge will arrange anything you want to do around Los Cabos, from sportfishing and scuba diving to horseback riding.
On the ocean's edge, at the Sea Grill, you'll feel like you're at a special barbecue planned for your pleasure. Ask the chef about the fish, shellfish and meats being cooked, have a sample, and then choose your entree. Adjacent to the Sea Grill, at the restaurant, you can dine al fresco on the patios or indoors in air-conditioned comfort. Select a vintage wine from a 2,400-bottle wine room. Sip drinks under huge palapas, the open-air, wood-frame shelters with palm-frond thatched roofs.
At night, you can choose your favorite constellation at the Stargazers Hour: the resort's large, computerized telescope can be programmed to see any stars in the heavens, and you just tell the operator what you want to see.
Las Ventanas is a feast for your senses, garnished by many special touches. When you walk around the hotel at night, open-flame torches illuminate your way -- and create reflections that dance on the waves. Rather than concrete barriers, there are "living walls" of vines and flowers. The sounds of the breaking waves fill your ears. The network of underground service tunnels crisscrossing the resort enable fast service and shield guests from the obtrusive.
Everything has been planned and designed to see, feel, taste and experience the best Los Cabos has to offer. There is always another pleasure, emotion or sensual stimuli to experience, from sipping a margarita on an in-water stool at the swim-up bar to rejuvenating hydrotherapy treatments, from fresh catch grilled in front of you to gazing up at a starry night through your personal telescope. The "windows to paradise" open wide at Los Cabos' finest resort.

HAL THANNISCH, JR., AIA, ULI
Developer of Las Ventanas al Paraiso
As an architect and developer for some of the world's leading names in hospitality and resort development and design, Hal Thannisch, president of Atlanta-based Thannisch Development Services, Inc. (TDS), has orchestrated the creation and realization of hospitality projects that have set industry standards.
As the developer of Las Ventanas al Paraiso, Thannisch brought to the project a wealth of expertise acquired over almost two decades of involvement in the financing and development of successful and internationally noted hotels, ski resorts, commercial office and convention facilities, waterfront and maritime resorts, recreational facilities, renovation and multi-use projects throughout the United States and abroad.
Wilson & Associates, the acclaimed Dallas-based interior designers who created the distinctive, Mexican-Mediterranean environment at Las Ventanas, teamed up with San Diego-based Art Consultant Joan Warren-Grady in a painstaking search for the artists and artisans whose work would embody the essence of Las Ventanas al Paraiso.
The effect is achieved through a unique combination of original pieces of art from highly accomplished Mexican and U.S. artists, along with the traditional work of local artisans and craftsmen which is found throughout the resort.
Original Works of Art Abound at Las Ventanas
The artistic focus of Las Ventanas al Paraiso are a vivid painting in multi-colored cultural themes by Mexican master Rodrigo Pimental, and the bronze sculpture of a mermaid by noted American sculptor Deloss McGraw.
Pimental's work, which was purchased from a museum in Mexico City, adorns the reception area. His credits include more than 80 solo and joint exhibitions throughout Latin America, the United States and Europe. McGraw's valuable pieces hang in museums and buildings throughout the United States. Often drawing inspiration from literature, a Spanish poem about paradise appears on his mermaid, which welcomes guests as they pass from the lobby area into the heart of the resort.
Two original works by Santa Barbara artist Dorothy Churchill-Johnson hang in the lobby and depict oversized images of cactus. Churchill-Johnson, whose meticulous drawings have been characterized as super-realism, has had numerous gallery showings and her works are also in many private collections.
Both pottery and large murals comprised of colorful tiles by acclaimed Mexican artist Fernando Andriacci appear in the lobby and public corridors, and feature the fanciful animals and cultural themes for which he is renowned.
The beautiful mural in the dining room was painted on-site by Los Angeles artist Hampton Hall, and provides a striking and colorful backdrop for the resort's fine restaurant. His pieces enhance many luxury hotels as well as such private collections as that of the Sultan of Brunei.
San Diego artist Barbara Weldon produced a "paradise" series of original and individual pieces for every suite at Las Ventanas. The oils on paper are numbered and beautifully custom framed. Her original paintings are displayed in the entryway and over the luxurious bathtub in each suite, where guests can enjoy her artistry while relaxing in private. Weldon is a highly recognized artist whose works hang in countless public and private collections.
Master Craftsmen Set the Mood
The meticulous handwork of local craftsmen is evident throughout the resort. A local husband and wife team, Isidrio and Amora Sorya, hand-painted the textured, faux finishes that grace the walls in many public spaces, the wine room, and the bathrooms in the suites.
Two master artisans from Mexico City, directing a team of tilers, created stunning headboards in every suite, featuring inlaid pebbles in a dramatic, stylized sunburst design.
Meandering throughout the resort are beautiful, raised-pebble walkways, every one of which was hand-laid by local artisans, as was the impressive stone carpet in the reception area and in each guest room. The artisans were given a general pattern and then allowed to interpret and let their artistic talents flow -- assuring that the result would have a true Mexican feeling, rather than a contrived, modern look.
The handwork by Mexican artisans includes many subtle touches. The expertise of Mexican artist Alberto Grave is displayed in the suites, where subtle designs and detailing in Mexican motifs are hand painted on all the built-in night stands and over every fireplace.
Master woodcarvers in Guadalajara meticulously hand-carved the impressive cedar doors to each suite that provide an oversized welcome for guests.
Adding another dimension, there is considerable wrought iron work throughout the resort -- the artistic, yet functional, locks that adorn the windows and doors in every suite were created by a Los Cabos metal artisan. Lighting up the night at Las Ventanas are two incredible, hand-made, wrought iron chandeliers with a remarkable celestial theme -- giving the impression that stars hang from the enormous thatched palapas in the bar and the reception area.
The overall effect of the art and artisanry at Las Ventanas is stunning: time-honored artisanry and original works of art give depth and significance to the resort experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the heritage of a celebrated culture while reveling in the luxury of a world-class resort.

TEQUILA & CEVICHE BAR OFFERS LESSONS, TASTINGS & EXCLUSIVE SELECTIONS
Las Ventanas al Paraiso recently created a unique concept that introduces guests to the finer, more sophisticated points of Mexico's signature -- and internationally celebrated -- age-old liquor, in combination with experiencing a typical dish enhanced with the exceptional bounty of the Baja California waters.
The Tequila & Ceviche Bar serves an extensive, and changing, array of ceviche complemented by the widest, and finest, selection of tequilas in Los Cabos. The ceviche menus are changed regularly to take advantage of the freshest and best seafood available at any given time, as well as to create new combinations and innovations in ceviche. The nearly 50 tequila varieties are all exclusive 100% Agave Tequilas, Mexico's best which are certified by the government to exacting standards.
Putting a distinctly Mexican twist on traditional "wine tastings," the Tequila & Ceviche Bar offers Tequila Lessons combining education and tastings. The resort=s "Tequileros@ conduct the lessons for several guests up to a maximum of ten. Guests learn about the history of tequila, classifications, the distillation process, the different types, and the appropriate way to drink it. They then taste three kinds of tequilas -- a Blanco (aged up to 60 days), Reposado (aged up to 12 months) and Anejo (aged a minimum of 13 months) -- which are served with ceviches, guacamole, baked pita crisps and tortillas. The Tequila Lessons are $25 per person.
The legendary liquor is enjoying a renaissance, becoming the latest drink of choice among many trendsetters worldwide, and at Las Ventanas tequila is now the most popular beverage among guests. The history of tequila dates back to ancient Mexico when the Aztecs extracted "pulque," the natural juice from the heart of the native Agave plant because it was believed to promote relaxation and a general feeling of euphoria. Much later, the pulque was distilled into what is known today as tequila.
Las Ventanas offers many of Mexico's best and rarest tequilas. The current menus include the following tequilas
Extra Anejos (aged 24 months in oak barrels): Don Julio Real, Porfidio Barrique de Ponciano, Herradura Seleccion Suprema, Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia, Gran Reserva XQ, and Pure Sangre Gran Reserva.
Anejos: El Tesoro de Don Felipe, Siete Leguas D'Antano, Porfidio Ceramica, Lapiz Anejo, Oro Azul Artesanal, Porfidio Cactus Anejo, 3 Generaciones, Herradura, Reserva Antigua, and Tequila Corralejo.
Reposados: Galardon Reposado, La Cava de Don Augustin, El Tesoro de San Felipe, Reserva de Don Julio, Oro Azul Reposado, 1000 Agaves, Revolucion, Las Trancas Reposado, El Chinaco Reposada, El Centinela Reposado, Cazadores Reposado, Centenario Reposado, Don Tacho Reposado, Cascahuin Reposado, Siete Leguas Reposado, Herradura Reposado, Porfidio Reposado, and Conquistador Reposado.
Blancos: El Tesoro de San Felipe, Porfidio Silver, Don Julio Blanco, El Chinaco Blanco, Herradura Blanco, Conquistador Blanco, El Centinela Blanco, and Tequila de Oro Blanco.
The ceviche selections range from the exotic such as sea snail ceviche to the classic Huachinango (red snapper), which is the original Mexican ceviche and the best seller. Among the recent items on the ceviche menu are: Shrimp, Lemon and Olive; Cabrilla (sea bass) with Orange, Papaya & Basil; Dorado with Peppers, Oregano & Grappa; Abalone with Lime, Avocado, Cilantro & Tequila; Bay Scallop with Mint, Cucumber & Chinchon; and Shaved Tuna with Sake, Ginger and Watercress.

EDWARD T. STEINER
Managing Director Las Ventanas al Paraiso
Edward T. Steiner is a veteran hotelier with a 20-year background in the hospitality industry. Over his accomplished career, he has developed his own highly successful style of management that he brings to Las Ventanas al Paraiso. Steiner's multi-prong style is founded on an utter commitment to detail, quality and guest orientation; on being completely hands-on in overseeing all aspects of hotel operations and the guest experience; and focusing on people management and team work to create the highest standards of service.
At Las Ventanas, Steiner has applied his style of management to assemble a team of professionals that is well-trained, instilled with a sense of pride and commitment, and dedicated to the common goal of delivering the five-star level of service and quality that Rosewood is recognized for worldwide.
Steiner arrived in Los Cabos with an international perspective and experience, but with Latin American roots and full fluency in Spanish. He was born in Chile of a German family, educated in England and returned to South America to work as an engineer. Not long after returning to South America, he decided to make a career change -- to a profession he found more exciting and intriguing -- and entered the hotel business.
He came to Las Ventanas from the four-star/four-diamond Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C., where as general manager he worked closely with the staff to significantly enhance service standards, resulting in a doubling of repeat business and a dramatic improvement in the hotel's bottom line. Previously, he was part of the opening team of the five-star-/five-diamond Grand Bay Hotel in Coconut Grove, Florida, and then served as the hotel's assistant general manager.
Throughout his hotel career, Steiner has had particular impact on food and beverage operations, demonstrating a special talent for instilling new life in the dining operations while improving profits. Food and beverage was his early area of specialization in the hospitality field, serving as the regional director of food and beverage in the Caribbean for Carnival Hotels & Casinos with responsibility for four hotels.
At Las Ventanas al Paraiso, Steiner has also made food and beverage a focus, taking his most hands-on approach yet with dining. Rather than have a food and beverage director, the chef reports directly to him. Steiner and the chef work together to create a culinary experience that is unsurpassed in Los Cabos, and has become a symbol of excellence for Las Ventanas' guests.
THE ART & ARTISANRY OF LAS VENTANAS AL PARAISO
At Las Ventanas al Paraiso, guests are immersed in more than unsurpassed luxury and pampering. Las Ventanas is also an aesthetic world, of refinement and creativity, showcasing both stunning original art and the centuries-old design traditions of master Mexican artisans.
More than anything else, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts created Las Ventanas to be an experience, all its own. And art and artisanry imbue the resort with romantic and cultural flavors, as well as rich colors and textures, that add emotion and graciousness to the overall experience.
