Coffee and Cocoa sector

Côte d'Ivoire is the world's premier cocoa producer and exporter (1 000 000 tons per year, 40% of world production). It occupies the 3rd place for coffee (300 000 tons yearly).

Increased agricultural production and improved gathering conditions insure the proper supply of processing units. The development of cocoa and coffee production in the south-west region means high quality and quantity are available.

COCOA

Cocoa Beans
Côte d'Ivoire has liberalized its domestic market while maintaining quality and lowering the percentage of bad nibs (maximum of 15 to 20%).

Transformation is mainly into cocoa butter, cake, powder and to a lesser extent, bar grade chocolate.

The 3 local industrial producers are: SACO (Groupe BARY-COLLEBAULT), UNICAO (Groupe SIFCA) and CEMOI-CI. These units currently transform 250 000 tons of nibs. The number of producers recently increased to 4, following a decision by the CARGILL Group to open a factory in Côte d'Ivoire, with a yearly capacity between 120 000 and 150 000 tons. The general plan for the sector is to increase processing capacity to 500 000 tons per annum by the year 2000. This goal is made all the more attainable by the renewed profitability following the devaluation of the CFA francs. As an example, profitability for a cocoa butter and cake production units with a capacity of 70 000 tons grew from 0,55 CFA F/ton to 297 CFA F/ton. For bar grade chocolate production units with a capacity of 20 000 tons/year, those figures evolved from 10,456 CFA F/ton to 324 CFA F/ton.

The Government supports the movement toward high-added-value products through the granting of tax exemptions.
