animals endowed with magic power, according to
popular belief, and ritual masks are carved.
Basket
making and weaving of mats are of Bantu
origin. Raw materials are staple fiber, stem, leaves
and straw. A particular technique called “crossed and
twisted” characterizes the baskets that are most of
time very colorful. Bags woven from grass, twigs,
and straw are decorated with clear-cut geometric
designs in black, yellow, and reddish brown.
Wooden furniture and household utensils
are
covered with carved representations which some-
times form complex decorative compositions.
Fabric weaving
production traditionally made of raf-
fia and cotton have been supplanted with fine items
with maiamba palm.
Sculpture
in Angola is pretty much dominated by the
nude form. The greatest expression of this art can be
found in Cabinda.
Masks and statuettes
essentially made of ivory and
wood are also widely available.
