Ghana Celebrates Millenium

The passing millennium has seen Ghana rising from colonial status into a proud independent nation striding forward in peace and stability. And like most countries in the world, she has lined up a lot of programs to celebrate the passing away of the millennium. "The millennium celebrations have been associated with a lot of projects worldwide. Ghana will initiate a number of special millennium community projects, arts, science and culture", said Commodore Steve Obimpeh,Chairman of the Ghana Millennium Commission .
Ghana is not celebrating the millennium exactly as other countries are doing. Together with the United Kingdom, they are using their unique position as countries situated on the 0 degrees longitude against which time, date, distance and many standards are marked, as an important feature worth celebrating alongside the millennium. "The activities will necessarily be with reference to the 0 degrees longitude or the Greenwich Meridian at which the second millennium will end and from which the third will start." Commander Obimpeh said.

The most important activity is a tree-line project, involving planting of economic and aesthetic trees to mark the path of all communities and settlements lying along the Greenwich Meridian in Ghana.

From now until the year 2001 that the celebration will last, Ghanaians will continue to thank providence for its unique position and rare opportunity to see the twilight of the second millennium and the dawn of the third millennium.

Although, way away from its targeted goals as enshrined in its vision 2020 document, most Ghanaians are aware that with hard work, dedication and patriotism the country will not only become a paradise but also the Gateway to West Africa.
