TOOR DHAL

Toor Dhal is known by many names around the world such as Arhar Dhal, Tuvar Dhal, Dry Legumes, Yellow Split Peas, Split Lentils, Lentils and Pulses

Toor Dhal is classified under the category of legumes. It provides many of the nutrients required for a healthy body, such as protein, fat and carbohydrates. It is especially rich in protein and often forms the main protein intake for vegetarians. The B vitamins, potassium, folic acid, iron, magnesium and calcium present in legumes help meet the vitamins and minerals required for a healthy body. Additional benefits of legumes are that they are high in dietary fibre, low in saturated fat and cholesterol free.

The main types of Toor Dhal supplied by COMPRO are:

Non-Oily Toor Dhal

The preferred type of dhal for consumers who do not buy in bulk or eat dhal purely from a heath food point of view. The original taste is preserved through our stringent milling process. It is also the preferred type of dhal in the Far East, and amongst Caucasian consumers.

Oily Toor Dhal

The dhal is treated with edible oil, after the manufacturing process, to provide a more intense taste and to increase the shelf life of the dhal. It is the preferred dhal for consumers who buy in bulk, with the added benefit of not having any chemical preservatives added. This dhal is the preferred dhal for consumers who live in, or originate from, the Indian Sub-Continent.

AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES

COMPRO is one of Malawi’s premier exporters of agricultural commodities. The agricultural commodities are purchased seasonally, but can also be stored, by COMPRO, for customers and exported in smaller quantities throughout the year and hence minimizing the customer’s financing and storage costs. The agricultural commodities exported by COMPRO are used by a wide variety of organizations in providing products for consumers.

The agricultural commodities that COMPRO trades in are as follows:

  • Maize: Exported for use by millers of maize flour, which is the staple food in Southern Africa and also for food relief programs under World Food Program and other non-governmental organizations.

  • Groundnuts: Exported to confectionary companies for use in chocolates, biscuits and snack bars. Manufacturers of peanut butter also purchase whole and split ground nuts.

  • Soya: Exported to companies who can the soya, use soya in the manufacture of processed foods and also for use in the manufacture of baby foods and porridges.

  • Birds Eye Chilies: Malawi’s Birds Eye Chilies are famous around the world for their exceptionally pungency, colour and taste. COMPRO exports to companies who use the Malawi Birds Eye Chilies in the manufacture of spices and sauces, and to pre-packers who sell the birds eye chilies whole. COMPRO also exports Malawi Birds Eye Chilies for a completely non-food use. Manufacturers of tear gas also use Malawi Birds Eye Chilies due to the strength and pungency of the chilies.

  • Sugar Beans: Exported for canning, pre-packing and also for distribution under food relief programs.

  • Sunflower Seed: Mainly exported to manufacturers of pet foods (e.g. bird feed) and are also used in confectionary manufacture.

  • Cow Peas: Exported for canning, pre-packing and also for distribution under food relief programs.

  • Guar Beans: Exported to processors of guar gum, which is used in processed foods. The whole bean is also exported for canning.
