HISTORY
Ancient History
The rise of human civilization is widely believed to
have occurred around 3 million years ago along the
northern African Rift Valley, precisely where Zambia
lies. Archaeologists have even found artifacts like
some of mankind's first stone tools along places like
the Zambezi River. Such sites have been discovered
OVERVIEW
General Information
The country of Zambia has a wealth of investment
opportunities and entertainment options available for
the business traveler. To understand how what was
once a closed off economy has become such an at-
tractive place for travel and investment, it is important
to look at its recent past and the remarkable evolution
it has undergone in such a short period of time.
In the early 1990s, Zambia began its transition from a
socialist to a market-oriented economy with the initia-
tion of an ambitious economic liberalization program.
This helped to unlock the country's vast potential and
created a situation that would encourage business
development and generate improvements upon both
its social and physical infrastructures.
Zambia has since done much to promote market
liberalization, deregulation, and privatization, which
have resulted in enhanced competition, efficiency,
and increased commerce and industry. These last
years have seen an increase in private sector activ-
ity and the implementation of incentive schemes de-
signed to promote foreign investment.
This new international vision is evident when looking
at the various international organizations that Zam-
bia claims membership status. These organizations
include:
• The Southern African Development Community
(SADC)
