Local courts primarily administer matters of custom-
ary law, especially cases relating to marriage, prop-
erty, and inheritance. There is also an Industrial Re-
lations Court, which helps to resolves labor disputes.
Under the Constitution of 1997, the Supreme Court
of Zambia is recognized as the highest court in the
country and serves as the final court of appeal. The
President appoints the Chief Justice and another
eight judges to serve as judges of the Supreme
Court. In consultation with the Vice President and
Prime Minister, the President also appoints the Di-
rector of Public Prosecution (DPP) and the Attorney
General¬¬—the latter being the principal legal ad-
viser to the government and with both appointments
having to be ratified by Parliament. Despite the politi-
cal problems of the past, the government, throughout
Zambian history, has respected the independence of
the three branches of government: the Executive,
the Legislature and, the Judiciary.
