operates trains from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to
Kapiri Mposhi in central Zambia. On Tuesdays and
Fridays, The train, the Mukuba Express departs
Tanzania, and it arrives in Zambia two days later.
There are a number of amenities, and it is advised
to book tickets in advance.
Boat
A ferry service is available to Mpulungu across
Lake Tanganyika from the following destinations:
Kigoma in Tanzania and Bujumbura in Burundi.
The ferry that runs these routes is the MV Liemba,
a historical steam ship. It runs twice a month; how-
ever, it is often subject to long delays.
A pontoon ferry arrives in Kazungula from Bo-
tswana after crossing the Zambezi River. This ferry
runs daily; however, there is no strict departure
schedule.
Road
Visitors can enter Zambia by road through the
border countries Angola, DRC, and Mozambique.
These borders are open; however, border controls
are often quite slow. It must be noted that there is
a risk of landmines along the borders.
Travel is easiest to and from Zimbabwe. Border
crossing tend to be open from 0600-1800. Victoria
Falls, however, stays upon until 2000.
GETTING AROUND
Taxis
There are many taxis available in Lusaka (blue
Toyota Corollas). Prices are negotiable, and if you
intend on using a taxi for a few hours, it is better to
negotiate a fare for the entire day.
Bus & Minibus
All bus companies are privately owned; however,
the prices are all relatively standardized. Mini-
buses are available for short distances and tend to
be faster and slightly less expensive than regular
coach buses.
Crowded conditions and long routes over heavily
potholed roads make travelling by bus wearisome.
The buses are fairly old and the advertised "air
conditioning" often does not work.
Long-range buses frequently leave from Lusaka
to all major cities. CR Coach travels to Chipata,
Livingstone, Ndola, and Mongu. Other privately
owned companies run domestic services over a
number of routes.
The Lusaka Inter-City Bus Terminus, the main bust
station in the city, is located on Dedan Kimathi
Road, just north off of Independence Avenue and
behind the Cairo Road Shoprite.
Local town minibuses are painted blue, and they
can be boarded at almost any juncture. They are
not expensive, and it is even possible to negoti-
ate a price to rent out the entire minibus for private
travel.
