In Russia, everything starts in Moscow. With nearly
8.3m residents, Moscow (Moskva in Russian) is the
capital of the Russian Federation and of Russia's
Central Federal District.
Moscow covers 880 km2 and is divided into circles
around the Kremlin, which is the centre of Moscow.
These circles are now big boulevards located where
the old city walls used to be. The Kremlin and Red
Square were declared World Heritage sites in 1990.

Moscow will expand by incorporating its industrial
suburbs into the city.
There are more than seven hundred scientific institutions
in Moscow, as well as seventy-five upper-level educational
institutions, the most important being Moscow State
