"TOURISM IN THE FUTURE"

Since 1995, Cameroon has experienced a clear recovery of its tourist activity. According to the Minister for Tourism, Mr. Pierre Hele, the objective is " to make of tourism a powerful leverage of the national economic boost and to go up from 180 000 tourists per annum to 500 000 in 2004 ". The infrastructures of reception include 120 establishments of lodging classified for a total capacity of approximately 5000 rooms, particularly distributed in Yaoundé and Douala where the international chains such as Hilton, Meridian or Accor (Ibis) are represented. This " miniature Africa ", with more than two hundred significant places of interest; seven national parks and more than four hundred kilometers of Atlantic coast, set up a policy aiming at attracting local and foreign investors.
Cameroon, which was liberalized gradually, joined again for two years with the international fairs by investing approximately 1.5 billion CFA Francs per annum in its promotion, offers many investment opportunities: construction of hotel complexes and seaside resort villages, concession of tourist places or installation of infrastructures for the organization of cruising on large rivers. As inciting measurements, the exploitation of charter flights to Cameroon was authorized as well as the delivery of tourist visas in the airports. Assets which will certainly be exploited by the forty or so local tourist agencies to make the national tourist product more competitive.
