"THE MODERN WAY"

Whereas the years of economic recession were remembered by the absence of construction of new basic infrastructures as well as the deterioration of those already existing, Cameroon intends firmly to make up for its lost time by developing the infrastructures allowing the fluidity of the goods' routing. With this intention, an envelope of 2325 billion FCFA was allocated to the Public Works Ministry in order to restore the road network which counts 50 000 kilometers of roads. The bitumen's road network, which already cost 1200 billion CFA Francs, is being extended with the construction of new highways and secondary roads while a project to connect Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon will be launched soon this year. Mr. Jerôme Obi Eta, Minister for Public Works delightedly says: " When all the road projects will Be completed, our bitumen' s new road network will extend to 5500 kilometers in the Country." In 1995 the State voluntarily withdrew from road maintenance activity in favor of private operators and –of which nearly 90% today is realized by them.
The public companies Labogénie and Matgénie, after having undergone a reorganization, must face competition. " We guarantee to the contractors an expertise recognized for its reliability and its guaranteed effectiveness to ensure the lifetime of the works as well as their rational and effective operation ", ensures Mr. David Minkousse, General manager of Labogénie, a company of reference in expertise and control of civil engineering works. The need to support national SME( small and medium enterprises) in the construction of the infrastructures is essential. " We must show initiative to satisfy the unceasingly growing request in matters of Civil Engineering equipment ", states the General manager of Matgénie, Mr. Jeremiah Andoseh whose company is divided into five regional directions with a stock of machines and equipment each; and expecting to be taken over by a private operator. For the financial year 2000-2001, the budget allocated to the Public Works Ministry will be reinforced. A support will in addition be brought to SME of this sector in order to improve the completion periods of the contracts awarded to them.
