GETTING AROUND

BY ROAD

Buses

Bus Station in Kisumu

The cheapest form of transport and one of the safest public transport.

Matatu

Meaning: three, because when they started working they cost 3 Kenyan shillings.

This is the transport local people travel with. They are usually colorful minibuses, with loud music blaring out of the windows, and squashed people. The matatu will take you anywhere you want to go, nevertheless it is a notorious mode of transportation known for its wild way of driving and frequent fatal accidents. We recommend trying it at least once, but not as a travel medium.

Taxis

This is probably the best way of transportation within Nairobi. There are various different types of taxis. Some with whom one can bargain and some that have fixed prices. The latter, which are the gray British taxis, can usually be found in front of hotels and in other tourist areas. The former can be found all over town, and usually have little, wooden, removable signs stating "Taxi" on top of the roof of their white cars. Taxis can also be obtained by telephone.
Mini-buses

This form of transportation is used mostly for safaris; either private or group safaris. They are safe and quite comfortable, if of course they are not full.

BY AIR

Most international airlines fly to the Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi as well as to Moi International Airport in Mombasa. If however one is flying within the country or region the probability is that one will fly either Kenya Airways or Air Kenya.

Kenya Airways

Kenya Airways is Kenya's international airline, which recently has become a major partner with KLM. It has improved dramatically considering its status 3-4 years ago. However, they are still rather unreliable in terms of service and bookings, since they have a tendency of overbooking flights.

Air Kenya, on the other hand, is a small local airline, but with incredible service and reliability. It flies to all major cities in Kenya as well as to the various game parks and lakes. Choosing Air Kenya is an experience in itself since most of the planes are small propeller planes, giving the it an authenticity and reminiscence into the colonial days.

BY TRAIN

Kenya Railways operates over 2630 km of track. Comfortable sleeper services exist between Nairobi and Mombasa and Nairobi and Kisumu. Unfortunately taking the train is a long and tedious process, taking sometimes more than 13 hours. Passenger service is only performed nightly.
