FIJI GAS
- AN OVERVIEW |
The Fiji Gas Co Ltd. was founded in 1956. Since
then we have grown into Fiji's largest gas company
with over 1100 metric tonnes storage capacity
at 5 terminals around Fiji. Our business is the
sale distribution of L.P. gas (butane), Hydrocarbon
based refrigerants, domestic cookers, commercial
catering equipment, industrial burners and the
design, installation and maintenance of hot water
systems ranging from single point domestic units
to large scale hotel systems and steam boilers.
Fiji Gas own and operate 4 L.P. Gas road tankers
to efficiently deliver gas to our bulk customers.
This together with our highly trained industrial
services division provides our clients with a second
to none service and delivery system.
Fiji Gas enjoys a close working relationship with
our major consultants - System Control Engineering
in Melbourne Australia, and Thomlinson Boilers
also in Melbourne. We also have the backing of
well reknowned companies such as Klockner of Germany
and Nuway Burners in Australia and New Zealand.
Our association with our overseas partner, Boral
Energy has meant access to expertise in the industry
and their investment has contributed to the growth
of Fiji Gas. We operate under the strict Australian
standards code which has lead to a very enviable,
safety record.
We remain a highly dedicated privately owned company
with a strong interest in the future of our industry
and our country. We are very proud to be the nation's
number 1. After all, we've been at it for over
40 years.
Fiji Gas has 95 workers nation wide. It has terminals
in Suva, Sigatoka, Lautoka, Labasa, and Savusavu
and it is planning to enlarge the storage area in
Lautoka. The company has two terminals in Tonga
- one at the capital Nuku'alofa on the island of
Tongatapu and the other on the island of Vava'u
to the north. It exports gas in cylinders to Tuvalu
and Kiribati. Fiji Gas has a fleet of nearly 20
vehicles that run on liquid petroleum gas. These
vehicles include cars, trucks and vans. There is
only one privately owned gas car in the country.
It belongs to Ian Simpson, of Pacific Crown Aviation,
in Nadi.
HISTORY |
Forty years ago four engineers got together and
set up the first gas company in Fiji. They started
ordering gas stoves and gas cylinders. But just
before the company started the four engineers were
transferred out of Lautoka by their employer Colonial
Sugar Refinery. They approached Roger Probert who
convinced his father to buy into the company. The
shareholders were the Probert family and their friends.
The company started importing cylinders of gas from
Australia and then England.
1958: The company moved its operations to Cumming
street in Suva. It still a fairly small distribution
at that time.
1959: It was obvious that the company desperately
needed more storage space. By this time, Ready Gas
Fiji was importing gas from Indonesia. So the company
bought a property in Lami and built a storage there.
Supply problems with Indonesia forced the company
to turn towards Saudi Arabia for gas. At this stage,
Ready Gas Fiji was importing gas tanks and filling
the cylinders in Fiji.
1960: A Danish company offered to supply gas
to the region. It visited Fiji, French Polynesia
and New Caledonia. Ready Gas Fij approached Shell
Fiji and Mobile Oil to help build a terminal.
1963: Mobile started building a terminal at
Walu Bay with 60 tonne tank and a discharge line
connected to the wharf.
January 1964: The company's name changed to
Fiji Gas Company Limited. Mobile Oil bought the
company's storage tanks and cylinders which were
then leased back to Fiji Gas.
1970: Boral Gas Pacific started looking to the
Pacific to extend its operation. Boral Gas had set
up in Papua New Guinea in the mid-1960s to supply
the Australian army.
August 1972: The shareholders of Fiji Gas (Probert
and his family friends) accepted Boral's Gas's offer
to buy half to the company. But this led to series
of legal problems with Mobile Oil. The oil company,
furious with Fiji Gas for accepting a foreign partner,
refused to supply gas and terminal space. But a
series of court cases forced the company to continue
supplying.
1974: Mobile Oil refused to renegotiate after
it expired. By this time, Fiji Gas was already operating
a terminal at Lautoka and was about to complete
the terminal at Wailada, in Lami. Each terminals
at Savusavu, Sigatoka and Labasa were built later.
1986: Fiji Gas bought a terminal in Nuku a'lofa.
It built a second Tongan terminal Vavau last year.
