Transport development

In other sectors like transport, civil construction and housing there are investment opportunities. Coming to road transport, because of the huge traffic jams; the authorities are thinking about the construction of a ring road around the City of Port Louis, and a light railway system between the City and the town of Curepipe. These projects have been under discussion for some years now but no decision have yet been taken. However it is expected that in 1999 the groundwork for these projects will start.

Over the last couple of years, the road network has been upgraded in order to deal with traffic jams which were having drawbacks on the economy. Work is in progress on a number of projects namely the Third Highway Project and a second access on the highway between Phoenix and Nouvelle France.

The vehicle fleet is on the move and various firms, like Iframac, ABC Motors, Leal & Co. Ltd, are selling an important number of new vehicles annually - taking into account the relatively small market in Mauritius. This allows the fleet to be renewed and reflects at the same time a modern society.
