Housing

Housing is yet another important issue in Mauritius. Some years ago thegovernment, due to the severe housing deficit, devised a programme to provide each family with a house.

The NHDC have launched a tender in December 98 for the construction of one thousand houses
The National Housing Development Co. Ltd (NHDC) was set up. It identified the needs and launched various projects with lines of credit from the Belgian and the Malaysian government as well as local funds but there is still room for other housing projects not only for the lower income groups, but for middle income group as well. Housing schemes are provided to the low-income category by the Government. The NHDC have launched a tender in December 98 for the construction of one thousand houses on various sites on the island.

Recently, in order to supplement the state efforts in housing, most local banks have devised a housing scheme for individuals. The Insurance sector is also a major lender by providing long term loans to customers for housing projects.
