Chingola. Its name comes from the large quantities
of copper found in the region. It was not until the
1920s that any large mining efforts were made to
extract the copper.
Copper instigated infrastructure development in
Zambia, and it shaped colonial policies towards the
former Federation of Northern Rhodesia (Zambia),
Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), and Nyasaland
(Malawi). It was also copper that created the
socioeconomic tensions that forged the need for
trade unions and the eventual birth of Zambian
Nationalism.
To get to the Copperbelt, the air company Pro-
flight Zambia offers daily scheduled flights from
Lusaka to Ndola. Flights are also available to Kitwe
(approximately 45 minute flights).
By road, the Copperbelt is easily reached from
Lusaka by taking the Great North Road to Ndola
(approximately a 4 hour drive).

Lake Chilengwa, located approximately sixteen
kilometers southeast of Ndola, is one of two sunken
lakes found on the Copperbelt. The other sunken
lake is Lake Kashiba, which is located further south
on the Kapiri Mposhi road. The lakes were uniquely
formed by the collapse of surface rock into the
underlying limestone. Lake Kashiba offers basic
camping facilities, a safe location for swimming, and
great bird watching opportunities.
