Katel company promoting American standard D-AMPS
was the first to enter the cellular communication
market in 1994. The network has been operating for
more than five years and numbers about 5000 subscribers.
Sweden's Ericsson has installed the basic equipment.
The Katel network now encompasses Bishkek, the Chui
Province, the Issyk-Kul Province, Osh and Jalal-Abad.

Katel was the first mobile operator to be established
in Kyrgyzstan and in its beginning it enjoyed
quite a great success. The history of Katel company
starts from 1992, when the vice-president of American
company "Cline's Group" Mr. Ross Jacoby
was invited to Kyrgyzstan. He was addressed with
the request to construct here a network of mobile
communication. Simultaneously, he was addressed
with the request to invest the development of
the channels of international communication. In
order to achieve these goals, a joint venture
was created in 1992, the founder of which became
American part with the control package of stocks,
"Telecom" and Ministry of Communication
also entered this enterprise. Katel received a
general license for rendering of mobile communication
services. Afterwards, Katel had also got a license
for foreign investment to build a land station
of satellite communication. In 1994 a mobile communication
and a land station of satellite communication
was opened in Kyrgyzstan, thanks to what our country
had received the first direct way out to the international
network of communication.
Our company was thinking for a long period of
time about the standards of mobile communication,
according to which we will work. The great impact
on choosing the standard of mobile communication
had a meeting of ministers of communication of
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan,
Tajikistan and Russia. The choice was made in
favor of American standard - "AMPS".
At that time the whole Northern and Southern American
continent, part of Africa, Asia and Europe were
working according to this standard.
At the moment we are covering 8% of country's
territory, where 80% of Kyrgyz population lives.
With the second operator having appeared in the
cellular communication market a dramatic decrease
of prices for services happened: from 0.45-0.5
USD to 0.25-0.3 USD per minute. As competition
grew the both companies reduced their prices to
0.07-0.15 USD per minute.
The mobile communication stations cover somewhat
10% of the country's territory, which is a good
indicator given the Kyrgyz landscape, where over
90% of the territory is mountainous.

"Katel"
company plans to drive own services
The "Katel" company is a 8 years old.
Summing up the results of its activity for the last
period, general director of the company Salavat
Iskakov told at a briefing at the Agency "Kabar",
that "Katel" intends to drive own services
till view reflection, including access to Internet
in any point of the world. In his words, totality
cost for giving services increased 10 times during
8 years. The company moves to implement own global
tasks - giving personal telephone service for each
Kyrgyzstaniers. During 7 years Katel opened set,
covering territory of the country, in which live
about 80% of the population of Kyrgyzstan. Besides,
the company gives services of international roaming
- possibility to trip with cellular telephone for
abroad in 77 countries of the world.
Services
We are always developing our network. This year
we are planning to cover two oblasts of our republic:
Naryn and Talas. We are going to increase the coverage
of Jalal-Abad oblast and we are persistently going
on with the expansion of coverage in Issyk-Kul oblast.
We are also increasing the quality of our services.
We already have such services as re-addressation,
call waiting and conference communication. Later
we included to this list a voice mail service. We
have also introduced a new type of service - "SMS"(short
message system). Thanks to this service several
new services were added, such as information system
with the help of which consumers can get exchange
rates info and the latest news in certain sphere.
With the help of this service we can send messages
from mobile phone to e-mail. Now we are working
on the possibility of getting e-mails to mobile
phones. One can get SMS messages both within the
local network and international network.
Our plans also include other kinds of technical
plans, which will allow us to provide our consumers
with new technical services. |
