A WORLD WIDE MARITIME GROUP

History



February 1977: CGM (Compagnie Générale Maritime) was founded as a result of a merger between
Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes (1851) and Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (1861).

1978: Jacques R. Saadé founds CMA (Compagnie Maritime d'Affrètement), based in Marseilles, by launching a regular line between South Europe/ Lebanon and Syria.

1995: CMA becomes the top French carrier in containerised liner shipping.

1996: The CMA-CGM group is created. CMA succeeds takeover of CGM during privatization operations.

1997: Worldwide unification of CMA and CGM agencies.
January 1997: Partnership agreement with NSCSA to jointly operate the French Asia Line (North Europe-Asia).

1998: The CMA-CGM group announces its vocation to be a "global carrier" covering all world markets

January 1, 1998 : Creation of the " GIE CMA CGM Agences France ", grouping together the group's six agencies in France: Paris, Dunkirk, Bordeaux, Montoir, Le Havre and Marseilles.

February 1998: Agreement with CONTSHIP on a jointly operated Round The World Service enables an improved sailing frequency of ten days.

March 98: Launching of a new service covering the Indian Ocean in cooperation with Delmas, DAL and SCL.

August 98 : Cooperation agreement with the Swiss carrier, Norasia, to operate together two of CMA's services between Asia and Europe: The French Asia Line (FAL) and the Med Club Express which become MEX-TPX

August 98 -- April 1999: Modernization of our fleet of four PCRP vessels (refrigerated container vessels) serving the French West Indies.

December 98: Launching of a new service between Europe and North China which become NCX

December 98: Launching of a new service between North Europe and South America in partnership with Transroll, Hamburg Süd and Aliancia.

December 98 : Acquisition of the regular container lines activity of the Australian national company, ANL..

1999: The CMA-CGM group becomes a genuine "global carrier" by adding a transpacific loop to its panoply of existing container services.

March 99: Purchase from Delmas of its Mediterranean/West Indies and Mediterranean/French Guyana and Brazil lines.

April 99: The Transpacific service is launched. Asia is now linked to the US West Coast ports of Long Beach (Los Angeles) and Oakland (San Francisco).

April 99: Cooperation agreement with Maersk/Sea-Land for the US-MED line that enables us to offer a weekly service.

July 99: Phase in of the first NSCSA vessel into the French Asia Line fleet.

September 99: Legal merger of CMA & CGM to form "CMA CGM" "The French Line "

October 99: CMA CGM has signed an agreement with German financiers for the order of 4 x 6500 teus vessels that will be chartered by the Group on a long term basis.
4 other vessels of the same type have been directly ordered by the Group.
Upon delivery, between May and December 2000, all 8 vessels will progressively be deployed on the FAL line.
