INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Zambia boasts many investment opportunities in
the tourism sector. The tourist capital of Livingstone
is a major investment destination and investment
has intensified. This is complimented by the invest-
ment opportunities that exist in the South Luangwa
National Park. Other tourism investment destina-
tions are the natural areas of Kasaba bay and the
Kafue National Park.
These two areas have historically acted as spring-
boards for tourism growth in Zambia. The south
Luangwa National Park was where the first walking
safaris were pioneered. Some potential areas of in-
vestment are found in the following:
• ,nfrastructure and transport services
• The creation and upgrade of all t\pes of accom-
modation
• Zambia’s uniTue cultural heritage
• $dventure tourism
• :ater sports activities
• 2ther sporting activities
DOMESTIC TOURISM
While there is, indeed, a greater emphasis placed
on foreign-based tourism in Zambia, domestic tour-
ism has a number of advantages associated with it
that have made this a target area of growth for the
Ministry of Tourism and Arts. It is widely believed
that promoting domestic tourism could, in fact, be a
sustainable way to improve the economy.
Domestic tourism has the potential to positively
impact the value chain and general trade cycle of
the economy by promoting a number of industries
that supply goods and services. Moreover, it is a
great promoter of culture, friendship, peace, and
appreciation of the country’s cultural heritage. Such
tourism enables residents with growing disposable
incomes to participate in productive and satisfying
travel, and it also serves as a way of redistributing
wealth within the nation’s boundaries.
INTERNATIONAL TOURISM
International, inbound tourism has been on a
steady rise in the last decade. In 1995, tourism
was at 163,000, and by 2010 tourism had reached
815,000.
Despite the country’s enormous tourism potential,
the sector is operating below capacity. Investors
still have a host of investment opportunities to
choose from. There are opportunities in the follow-
ing: marketing tourist attractions, cultural tourism,
and movie tourism.
TOURISM BOARD
The Zambia Tourism Board is the established gov-
ernmental agency responsible for the promotion of
Zambia as a tourist destination—both locally and
abroad.
