Agriculture
Dairy
Dairy farming is carried out by commercial, semi-
commercial, and traditional farmers, and it is a
subsector with considerable growth potential. Com-
mercial dairy farmers produce over 90 percent of
Zambian processed milk, which is usually pasteur-
ized and packaged. It is also used to make yoghurt,
cheese and fermented milk.
Fisheries
Fish is a major source of protein for many Zambian
households, and it is also able to provide a livelihood
for fisherman as a source of cash income. Com-
mercial production of fresh water fish occurs in the
northern, western, and southern parts of the country
as well as along major rivers and lakes. Develop-
ment programs are focused on conservation and
research in order to improve fish stock yields. The
private sector is involved in fish farming, marketing,
and distribution.
While fish is traditionally sold in its dried form, large
amounts are now being frozen due to improvements
in transportation and refrigeration facilities. While
fish farming contributes very little to the country’s
GDP, fish product exports to regional markets have
been on the rise in recent years

Monsanto is focused on agriculture and supporting
farmers around the world in their mission to produce
more while conserving more.
The company’s business is structured in two differ-
ent segments: seeds and genomics segment.
The company is constantly looking at ways to maxi-
mize the potential of seed both in terms of its yield
potential and also the technology used to protect it
so farmers can get more out of each seed. Monsanto
produces leading hybrid seed brands in large-acre
crops like maize, cotton, and oilseeds (soybeans
and canola), as well as small-acre crops like veg-
etables. It also produces leading biotechnology traits
that integrate insect control and weed control into
the seed itself; these are aimed at helping farmers
protect their yield while supporting their on-farm ef-
ficiency and reducing their on-farm costs.
As a company, Monsanto remains committed to
broadly licensing its seed and trait technologies
to other companies throughout the world. This ap-
proach ensures that farmers can access its products
in the varieties that mean the most to their farm.
In addition to its seeds and traits business, the com-
pany manufactures Roundup, the world’s best-sell-
ing herbicide, used for weed control by farmers both
on a large and small-scale as well as in non-crop, in-
dustrial, forestry, and conservation areas. Monsanto
also has a range of other crop protection products,
which include both selective and non-selective her-
bicides for the control of weeds.
