Zambian Fertilizers is the main leader of the sector
in the country.
The company produces organic enriched fertilizers
with organic pellets, which are produced from chick-
en manure. These nutrient rich pellets not only feed
clients’ crops, but also condition their soil by acting as
a food source for microorganisms in the soil, which
release vital elements for the crops. Organic matter
also increases the water-holding capacity of the soil.
Its fertilizers come enriched with lime granules to help
maintain a neutral pH for the soils and give the crop
the right environment to grow in. The company’s lime
granules are bound together by molasses.
Zambian Fertilizers blends specially formulated fer-
tilizers to suit the needs of the crop. The company
has an extensive range of blended fertilizers for each
type of crop.

In the early 1980s, ZAMSEED was the only seed
producing company in Zambia and therefore enjoyed
a monopoly. After liberalization of the economy from
1991-1992, there was market penetration by new
seed companies from South Africa and Zimbabwe.
This created healthy competition, enhancing levels of
customer service and the quality of seed.
ZAMSEED produces various types of certified seeds
for both the local and export markets. The product
range includes maize seed, soya beans, millets,
groundnuts, sorghum, cowpeas, sunflowers, wheat,
beans, and vegetable seeds. Due to market demand,
ZAMSEED has also diversified into supplying veg-
etative propagated materials like sweet potato vines
and cassava cuttings.
The company strives to produce and sell only seed
that is good and pure, at a price that is competitive
and will provide a fair return to its investors. The
company also invests in the improvement of its
produts through research and development.

Zambia Sugar Plc. is the group’s second largest
sugar producer following a major agricultural and
factory expansion project completed in 2009, which
increased the total annual sugar production capacity
from around 200,000 tons to 450,000 tons.
Zambia Sugar Plc. is part of the Illovo Sugar Group,
which dates back to 1891 when Reynolds Brothers
Limited was listed as a public company and Charles
George (CG) Smith, a local entrepreneur, was ap-
pointed as its agent in Durban.
The company is listed on the Lusaka Stock Ex-
change with 82 percent of its shares held by the Il-
lovo group and the balance held by institutional and
private investors. As the country’s leading sugar
producer, it cultivates sugar cane and manufactures
Vitamin A-enriched raw and refined sugar under the
Whitespoon brand name for local consumer markets
and industrial customers.
With increased sugar availability following the ex-
pansion project, sales to preferential markets in the
EU and into surrounding African countries have risen
significantly. The company also produces specialty
sugars for export to the EU and syrup for local con-
sumer markets.
The group is Africa’s biggest sugar producer and has
extensive agricultural and manufacturing operations
in six African countries.
