Zambia nationalized most industries, which then
saw National Milling Company Limited operating as
a government parastatal under the INDECO group of
companies. This was a body formed by the govern-
ment to oversee the operations of all companies that
were nationalized.
The coming of multi-party politics in 1991 saw the
privatization of most state-owned enterprises, and
during this period, National Milling Company Lim-
ited was privatized and purchased by Namib Mills.
The new owners faced a lot of challenges and were
eventually forced to close the company. In 2000, the
government Zambia closed down National Milling
Company and readvertised the sale of the company.
It was then purchased by Seaboard Corporation of
the United States of America, who reorganized the
company under a new entity named National Milling
Corporation Limited.

Pembe manufactures and sells PP woven sacks,
wheat flour (i.e bread, cake and brown flour), maize
flour, and animal feed.
A recognized brand name in many households over
the decades, Pembe is renowned for its consistent
quality and excellent services. From its humble be-
ginnings in Zambia in 2008, it has grown through the
years to achieve the status of one of the country’s
leading manufacturers of flour and animal feed.
Acting as one of the leading companies in the milling
industry in the region and with one of the largest and
efficient distribution networks in Zambia, the current
expansion projects of Pembe Mills include but are
not limited to the acquisition of storage facilities (i.e

Seed Co. Zambia prides itself as one of the country’s
leading player in the agricultural sector. The company
is involved in seed research, production, processing,
distribution, and marketing. Its flagship seed products
include hybrid seed maize, wheat, and soya bean.
The company also markets sorghum, sugar, beans,
groundnuts, and vegetables seeds. The maize seed
is now coated with small sparkling particles that will
enable customers to distinguish it (as genuine seed)
from the fake seed. The company’s customers range
from small-scale, emergent, and commercial farm-
ers. Others include the government and Non-Gov-
ernmental Organizations.
Taking advantage of Zambia’s unique location and
its diverse agro-ecological environments, Seed Co.
has invested in two research stations to maximize
germplasm screening and the development of variet-
ies with diverse adaptability to suit Zambia and other
countries in the region with similar environments. One
research station is located in the Mpongwe District in
the Copperbelt where disease pressure and rain are
very high. Another station is located in Lusaka, which
is the most productive agro-region of Zambia.
The company operates a centralized processing fac-
tory in Lusaka with a packing capacity of over 300
metric tons per day. This gives the company great ef-
ficiency in meeting big seed orders within a short pe-
riod. With the distribution network anchored around
the eight depots that are strategically located across
the country, seed has been taken closer to the farm-
ers. The depots are supplemented by a network of
appointed stockists in almost every district.
