An Act of Parliament established the Examinations
Council of Zambia (ECZ) in 1983 to set and conduct
examinations and award certificates to success-
ful candidates. Before this enactment, the Ministry
of Education and Culture, under the Examinations
Section, used to conduct the examinations. After
the enactment, the section continued to perform the
function of conducting the examinations while simul-
taneously developing an institutional framework and
job descriptions.
The full launch and operationalization of the Exami-
nations Council of Zambia was in 1987 as a semi-
autonomous public institution (Parastatal).

The University of Lusaka (UNILUS) is a modern pri-
vate university established under the University Act
no. 11 of 1999. The University commenced its opera-
tions in 2007, initially called the Institute of Corporate
Training and Research (ICTAR) and served as the
source of the Master’s Degree programs offered by
the Copperbelt University.
In 2008, the University of Lusaka introduced its
Bachelor’s Degree programs in partnership with the
Copperbelt University, and in 2009, it began offering
its own programs. It now offers a wide-range of pro-
grams at Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral levels.
Today, the total number of UNILUS students has ris-
en to over 3,000 from 71 students in 2007 when the
University opened. It now has a large number of Mas-
ter’s students and over 35 PhD students from various
parts of the region. This is a great achievement for a
private university that has only been in existence for
some 5 years.
The university aims to fulfill the ever growing demand
for employable human capital in various industries
through continuous interaction with employers, fo-
cusing on research and regular updates to the tailor
made programs whilst equipping the human capital
with cutting edge skills, knowledge, and information.
