Education
PRIMARY & SECONDARY
EDUCATION
Primary education begins when children are seven
years old and lasts from Grade 1 to 7. The govern-
ment offers free primary education, and upon com-
pletion, students receive a Certificate of Primary
Education (CPE).
Grades 8 and 9 are referred to as Junior Secondary,
and student must take a Junior Secondary Education
Exam to move on to grade 9. Secondary education is
finished upon completion of Grade 12.
HIGHER EDUCATION
To be given opportunities in higher education, stu-
dents must take national examinations after Grade
12. These exams are often quite competitive as there
are few spots available in the country’s colleges
and universities. Although quite expensive, private
universities are available, and they give additional
opportunities for students to continue their studies.
They are especially popular for students that may be
denied entry into the competitive public universities.

teacher training colleges in Eastern, Western, and
NorthWestern provinces. Five trade training institutes
will be located at various sites around the country.
A three-year program called Empowering Community
Schools Through In-Service Teacher Education (EC-
SITE) hopes to raise teaching standards in communi-
ty schools in Central and Copperbelt provinces. This
program aims to improve the quality of teachers by
enhancing their access to teaching and learning ma-
terials. The project officially began in January 2013,
and it even provides funds and assists teachers in
their continuing education endeavors.
